This programme will support non-specialist teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in the classroom.
The Work Group is based on six key themes across the Secondary curriculum, developing subject knowledge as well as exploring the pedagogy underpinning the student journey. The project is aligned with an overall Teaching for Mastery programme designed to develop maths teaching for connected understanding.
What will participating schools gain?
Participants will enhance their mathematical subject knowledge and learn how key representations can be used back in the
classroom to the best effect. They will be encouraged to try out proven methods with pupils and share with colleagues across the department.This programme will support non-specialist teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching maths, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in the maths classroom.
What will the Work Groups achieve?
Pupil outcomes
• Develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of the mathematics they are learning
• Achieve both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency
• Think, reason and discuss their mathematics in order to deepen their understanding
• Have a positive attitude to mathematics.
The course builds confidence in the non-specialist teacher, through the high quality training delivered by an NCETM accredited PD Lead. The project is aligned with an overall Teaching for Mastery Programme designed to develop maths teaching in secondary schools.Pupils will develop a deep, secure and connected understanding of the maths they are learning. They will achieve both conceptual understanding and procedural fluency and gain a positive attitude to learning the subject.
Expectations of Participating Schools
This programme is designed for teachers of mathematics who have not undertaken Initial Teacher Training in the subject.
Those who have previously completed a TSST course are still eligible to participate.
Participants are expected to:
• Attend all 12 sessions which are a series of in-person afternoon sessions and online twilight sessions and contribute to group discussions and activities
• Engage in gap tasks back in schools.
