Developing A-level pedagogy
Type: Work Group | For: Experienced A-Level maths teachers |
Time: 3 days | Cost: Free of charge |
This is a work group for experienced A Level maths teachers
Overview - This is a free sustained CPD for experienced teachers of A level Maths. Enhance your A Level teaching through experimentation, collaboration and discussion. Connect with experienced A Level teachers to form a local community of practice. Share and develop ideas to aid conceptual understanding of A Level concepts and explore the over-arching themes of problem-solving, mathematical argument and modelling.
What is the focus of this Work Group?
This Work Group provides support for the effective development of pedagogy in the teaching of A level mathematics to support Covid recovery, to enhance the quality of
teaching and the conceptual understanding of students, and the development of participants as leaders of A level teaching professional development in their
own schools or college.
Expectations of participants and their schools
Participants and their schools are expected to commit to three days of direct Work Group meeting time across the academic year.Participants who will find this Work Group particularly useful include those who have already completed other A level subject knowledge and pedagogy courses (or similar) and are able to work with other colleagues in their own or other schools.
What will participants achieve?
Professional learning
Participants will understand the purpose of the over-arching themes, their impact on teaching and learning and be confident to teach aspects of the content.
Practice development
Participants will plan sequences of lessons which meet the requirements of the linear A Level, apply pedagogical approaches to support Covid recovery and embed them in their own schools / colleges.
Whole school/departmental policies and approaches
Schools/colleges will have improved the capacity of staff to deliver A Level Mathematics and support Covid recovery.
Student outcomes
Students will be able to demonstrate/communicate the links between mathematical topics within the linear A Level content, have increased confidence and be better placed to continue their learning.
What will participating schools gain?
There is a range of currently available maths teacher professional development around
subject knowledge and pedagogy for new teachers of A level Maths, but no extended professional development for experienced teachers or leaders of A level Maths teaching around the overarching themes, technology or other aspects of pedagogy of the new A level Maths specification. There is a strong focus on pedagogy through the overarching themes of the new linear A level Maths specification, with changes to pedagogy in statistics teaching, assessment and expectations in the use of technology.
