This Work Group aims to support Secondary Teaching Assistants in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support pupils in the classroom. The training offers practical advice for support within the classroom or for small group intervention.
Structure of the Work Group
The Work Group will cover 6 main topic areas of Maths:
Number: Additive Reasoning
Number: Multiplicative Reasoning
Number: Calculation Methods
Application: Money
Application: Telling the Time
Application: Algebra
Participants will develop greater understanding of mathematical concepts and pedagogy. Consideration will be given to common misconceptions and practical approaches to dealing with these.
What will the Work Groups achieve?
Pupil outcomes
Pupils will demonstrate a positive attitude towards Maths, being willing to have a go, persevere, and share their mathematical ideas
Practice development
Participants will review their practice as a result of the sessions and make specific adaptations to support the pupils they are working with.
Professional learning
Participants will enhance their Maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key structures in each mathematical area covered e.g. understand the forms of multiplication and division, including the precise language, structures, and representations
Work Group expectations
This programme is designed for secondary teaching assistants who are supporting maths either within Maths classrooms or in small group intervention, and who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching Maths.
This work group may be particularly relevant for new teaching assistants or teaching assistants who have not received any Maths-specific training.
